If one leaves their solemn vows (a nun is in solemn lifelong vows; NOT a Sister), they have obviously, by that very fact, excommunicated themselves, and would no longer be in good standing with the Church.
A priest does not take vows, although he did promise obedience to his bishop (and his successors)..
